gender identity is a personal and internal experience of one's own gender. It
encompasses a person's sense of being a woman, a man, both, neither, or
anywhere on the gender spectrum. Gender identity can be the same as or
different from the sex assigned at birth.
Gender expression, on the other hand, refers to how
individuals outwardly express their gender to the world. This can include their
behavior, appearance, such as clothing, hairstyle, makeup, body language, and
voice. The use of chosen names and pronouns also plays a significant role in
expressing one's gender, as others often perceive and recognize a person's
gender through these aspects.
It's important to note that a person's gender identity is
distinct from their sexual orientation. The term "trans" or
"transgender" serves as an umbrella term encompassing individuals
with diverse gender identities and expressions that deviate from traditional
gender norms. This includes, but is not limited to, transgender individuals,
trans women (assigned male at birth, transitioning to female), trans men
(assigned female at birth, transitioning to male), transsexuals,
cross-dressers, and those who identify as gender non-conforming, gender
variant, or genderqueer.
Gender non-conforming individuals do not conform to societal
expectations and stereotypes associated with the sex assigned at birth. It's
important to recognize that a person's lived gender identity refers to the
gender they internally feel and express publicly in their daily lives, including
work, shopping, accessing services, residing in their communities, and beyond.
